Year 3 pupils will develop the skills and knowledge of food and nutrition by designing and making their own sandwiches. They will explore mechanical systems by investigating vehicles and they will learn more about product design while creating a photograph frame.
By the end of Year 3 most children should:
Investigate existing products, identifying strengths and weaknesses to formulate ideas and develop specific design criteria
Be able to design a product for a specific user or purpose, describing the wants and needs of their targeted audience
Use ICT to explore design possibilities, e.g. creating logos and packaging
Explore different design ideas and decide which idea to develop
Measure, mark out and cut materials safely and with some degree of accuracy, using chosen equipment safely
Explore how to make structures stiffer and stronger and more stable
Explore and construct axles and wheels
Talk about their designs as they develop and identify areas for development
Talk about changes they have made during the making process, referring to the design criteria
Understand that a healthy diet is made up from a variety and balance of different foods and drinks
Prepare simple savoury dishes safely and hygienically using a heat source where appropriate. Use a range of techniques such as chopping, slicing, grating, peeling, mixing, combining and spreading
Begin to know how food is grown, reared and caught in the UK and the wider world
